About Debbie Lear

STATEMENT

My paintings are multilayered in both content and form; they act as vehicles for recollection, reflection and prediction, often flitting between a narrative and pure abstract painting.  Recalled stimuli are experimented with and transformed into the tangible, allowing me to physically and mentally process personal experiences.  Paintings produced ‘automatically’ are edited in order to reach a formal composition which gratifies me and this process has prompted an interest into the boundaries of visual recognition by osmosis.

How far can a painter push a form before it loses its identity yet speaks outside of the geometric box?  At what point does the organised become disorganised?  At what point does tension snap?  In attempting to explore these concerns I have produced paintings which may appear ambiguous, coming not from a desire to cause uncertainty, but to question: Where does certainty lie?
